No More Homeless Pets News from Around the World

The Latest in Adoption Venues: Upscale Hotels
Aspen, Colorado
USA Today recently reported on the latest trend in hotel amenities:When Michael and Jolie Newman checked out of the St. Regis Aspen, they were packing more than surplus hotel soap and fond memories of a holiday in the Colorado Rockies. Accompanying them on the flight home was Ryan, a 5-year-old toy poodle. The hotel put the guests in touch with the Aspen Animal Shelter, which provides "loaner" dogs to visitors. After a day of hiking, the Newmans brought Ryan back to the hotel for the night. And the next. And the next. He went from rags to riches in a day. From the floor of the animal shelter to a bed at the St. Regis, Newman says. It's also a marketing success story. The loaner dog program is "extremely popular" among guests, head concierge Tim Sanders says.

From USA Today, reported by Jayne ClarkDim View of Dark Pets?
South Elgin, Illinois, and Las Vegas, Nevada
Ed Pilolla’s March 4 article in the Suburban Chicago News explores the plight of black dogs and cats in animal shelters.“ Prince, one of a hundred or so cats at the Anderson Animal Shelter, meowed and meowed on Monday trying to catch anyone's attention. Unfortunately for Prince, he's a black cat. And black cats — like black dogs — find themselves behind the eight-ball, so to speak, when it comes to catching someone's attention and getting adopted from a shelter.“ Although there are no national statistics or any studies done on the plight of Prince and his black brothers, national humane societies say the trend is indeed true.” Read more in the Suburban Chicago News.

Black Is Beautiful at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
We’ve also noticed that black animals are overlooked at Best Friends’ mobile adoption days in Las Vegas, Nevada. Best Friends' cat adoption counselor, Lezlie Sage, had an idea: What would happen if she brought only black cats one day? The first "Black Cat Extravaganza" featured black kitties in brightly decorated cages to show off their coats.“ They looked terrific en masse!” explained Lezlie. “And because all the kitties were black, people noticed their differences and saw them as individuals, instead of passing over them for more colorful cats.” We couldn't agree more!

Promoting Spay/Neuter in the Philippines
Manila, Philippines
The March 8th Manila Times featured an in-depth guide to spaying and neutering pets that dispelled the myths, highlighted the benefits, and provided information on local free spay/neuter programs. The article says, “The procedure of spaying and neutering is slowly gaining acceptance among Filipino pet owners. Some may think neutering is cruel to pets, but in truth it makes your pet healthier, safe from a hundred and one diseases, and even live longer.”

Neuter-Before-Adoption Ordinance
Petersburg, New Jersey
Thanks to Linda Gentille of the Upper Township Animal Shelter Committee, every animal adopted out of the city shelter will be spayed or neutered first. The initiative was passed unanimously by the mayor and Upper Township committee on March 10, 2003. For more information, contact Linda Gentille at: Linda@pianoprincess.com

Free Neutering for Large Dogs
Edmonds, Washington
In an effort to find homes for larger breed dogs, the Edmonds City Animal Shelter will be offering free spay/neuter for any Labrador retriever-mix or shepherd-mix dog that is adopted. Read more in The Seattle Times.

No More Homeless Pets in the Midwest
Best Friends community program manager Aimee St. Arnaud has been working with groups and individuals in the Midwest to encourage No More Homeless Pets. Here are some highlights from the past months.

The 4.32 Campaign
Page County, Virginia
A coalition of animal rescue groups launched a campaign this week to fix the longstanding problems at the Page County Animal Shelter. The coalition aims to raise $100,000 for improving conditions at the county's animal shelter. The fundraiser has been dubbed the 4.32 Campaign: If each of the 23,000 people in Page County donates $4.32, they’ll reach their goal.

The initiative was launched in January 2003, after reports of plans to destroy 40 dogs at the shelter were announced. That didn't happen, as volunteers from animal rescue groups emptied the shelter. Local humane groups have taken more than 1,000 dogs from the shelter in the past two years. "We want to get the county out of the pet-killing business,” explained local volunteer Donald Marro. Dogs, Kids and Allergies
As reported by CNN, a study of 286 children showed that exposure to a dog in the first year of life protected them against allergies later in life. Thirty-three percent of newborns without exposure to a dog developed allergies later on in life, compared to only 19% of those raised with a dog. (We'd trade Kleenex for a doggie any day!) How might a dog help reduce allergies? Read more on cnn.com.

Planning to Help Pets in an Emergency
Most emergency shelters for people don't accept animals. So what can people do to protect their pets in the event of a disaster?

South Carolina is joining other states to include animals in their disaster preparedness plans. Last week, a group of local animal experts and emergency officials in York County formed a volunteer task force to devise plans for protecting animals during a catastrophe. "In this day and age, it's something you've got to think about," said task force member Hanna Snow, animal control supervisor for York County. The task force, called the York County Animal Response Team, is made up of local veterinarians, animal rescue volunteers, animal control officials, and various law enforcement, public safety and emergency officials. They aim to create animal emergency plans for all types of disasters, including tornadoes, hurricanes, bio-terrorism and nuclear accidents. Read the full article.

The Big Fix
Only three-quarters of the way through the program year, The Big Fix Mobile Clinic has already exceeded their goal of 5,000 surgeries. They've done a grand total of 6,056 spays and neuters since July 1, 2002. Averaging 49 surgeries a day, the clinic also boasts one of the lowest complication rates anywhere!

Enoch Animal Shelter (Utah)
“ During the month of February, no adoptable animals were euthanized at the Enoch Shelter,” reported Paula Reese of Happy Tails, a newly formed local rescue group.
